The Gates to the Enigma

This is a tome that is well-known among magi of House Criamon, and can usually be obtained by a Criamon for appropriate exchanges (usually of something enigmatic and interesting, rather than mere vis). This tome includes the reason why most Tremere think twice before challenging Criamon magi to certámen. All these spells are easily useable on the caster, and some had to be especially re-researched to be castable on other individuals.

The Enigma's Gift: Creo Vim 30

The standard Twilight spell, known throughout House Criamon. Crafted by Criamon himself, it is effectively sigilless: the Founder's idiosyncratic stamp is invisible against the background of the teachings passed down by his filii.

Granting of Mystic Insight: Creo Vim 50

Range: Eye/Sight, Duration: Inst.

This variant of The Enigma's Gift has a longer range, and is capable of inducing Twilight in most sentient beings; it bears the same Int + Enigmatic Wisdom roll of 6+ to avoid leaking the power into the caster rather than blasting the target. It was crafted by ? of Criamon, who created it to test whether non-magi could experience the joy of Twilight. Quite a number of peasants, the occasional mystically talented Companion, and several knights were tested; all proved to be vulnerable to this spell. Most animals will simply become agitated by it (though horses will spook quite thoroughly and cats will simply curl up and begin purring) as if by the presence of a number of people with the Blatant Gift. Faeries and demons both appear to be vulnerable as well, though whether either or both are faking it is of course indeterminable by Hermetic magic. ? perished when the dragon he tested the spell on returned from Twilight and was able to penetrate ?'s wards (a feat that it had previously been incapable of). (?'s shade was summoned to tell of this before it was honorably sent on to Final Twilight.)

If someone with the Gentle Gift makes use of this spell, they will find themselves possessed of an aura much like The Phantom Gift for some minutes thereafter.

Gazing Upon the Twilight Void: Intéllego Vim 40

Range: Touch/Reach, Duration: Inst.

Induces Twilight, much like The Enigma's Gift, but does so by connecting the recipient's awareness to the flow of raw magic. The caster must make a Sta + Enigmatic Wisdom roll of 8+ to avoid "glancing" into this portal themselves.

Gentle Touch of Twilight: Muto Vim 40

Range: Touch/Reach, Duration: Inst.

Slowly reduces a person's resistance to Twilight until they float away on the ambient magical currents. This spell is said to be particularly effective in forging an understanding of a mystic place by explicitly using the local aura to go Twilight. The caster must make an Sta + Enigmatic Wisdom + Vim rank 12+ roll to keep their own resistance from being affected by this as well.

Fedoso's Journey Rations: Rego Vim 35

Range: Touch/Reach, Duration: Inst.

Rather than using magical energy summoned by the caster (as in The Enigma's Gift) to blast a person into Twilight, this channels magical energy from the surrounding environment. This is much more violent than Gentle Touch of Twilight and gives +3 difficulty to the control roll. The caster must make an Int + Enigmatic Wisdom + Finesse roll of 15+ to make sure the blast of magic doesn't catch them as well.

The Agony of Understanding: Perdo Vim 45

Range: Touch/Reach, Duration: Spec.

This spell was created by ? of Criamon, who sought insight through privation and self-torture. He claimed that by overcoming pain, one can overcome the distractions of the material world to more truly behold the Enigma. This spell works by torturing the magus' Gift until they perform the mystical equivalent of passing out-- into Twilight.

The recipient must soak a virtual +25 of pain with Stamina + Concentration + Enigmatic Wisdom [ + Meditation, if they are prepared for the spell]. (If the caster is not the recipient, they must soak a +15 similarly.) Any "damage" they take can be treated as fatigue on a separate chart from the actual fatigue level, and represents the distraction of ongoing pain. Meditation can be used to "heal" the pain much as it can be used to recover short-term fatigue levels. Whatever penalty the recipient starts out with applies to their rolls for control of Twilight; the caster will join them if they botch the "soak" roll.

Most Criamon are wary of this spell, as a potential botch could be quite dangerous; its popularity is only for its use as a victory spell should someone challenge the Criamon to certámen in Perdo.
