Amateur Baseball Report, 1996 July 22
After having yet another game rained out last Tuesday, the
Saugerties Dutchmen won a contest on the field for the first time this
month, downing former Mohawk-Hudson Baseball League foes the Troy
Haymakers 8-0 on Thursday. On Saturday, they played host to the
Middletown Explorers of the Hudson Valley Rookie League and fell 8-5
to split the season series. Sunday's Cantine Field offering was to
have been a doubleheader with defending Rookie League champs the New
Paltz Knights, but as the visitors only brought seven players, the
Dutchmen loaned them a few and the all-Saugerties squad whomped the
mostly-New Paltz squad 10-0. The Dutchies claimed the nightcap by
forfeit, upping their record to 16-9 on the season.
Next weekend marks the final Saugerties Dutchmen baseball
action for the season, as Cantine Field plays host to the third annual
Roy Helsmoortel Memorial Tournament. The round robin action starts
Saturday morning at 11 and ends Sunday evening with contests between
the past two champions, the Dutchmen and the Otsego Macs. In between,
each squad plays two games against the Long Island Orioles, who
finished 1-3 in the Sawyer Motors Classic earlier this season. And as
always, we'll have the report on that next week from our Hudson Valley
correspondent, Babs O'Reilly.
