UCSB Club Sports Roundup, 1996 April 17

All of the UC Santa Barbara Sport Clubs activities this weekend were away from campus, with the farthest away being the Admiral's Cup Regatta in New York. UCSB competed in a field of the top 20 schools in the nation, and finished 18th to hold their place in the national rankings. Jeff Grange shone for the Gaucho Sailors, winning one race and finishing second in another.

A bit closer to home was the State Schools Regatta in Sacramento, where UCSB took on other 12 other UC and Cal State rowing teams. The Gauchos finished fifth over all, with Men's and Women's Novice 8s making the finals. Meanwhile, the water ski club started their season at a tournament in Davis, finishing seventh, led by Townsend Bell and Keri Strategier.

On dry land, the UCSB cycling team was in action at UCLA, finishing second in the time trials and third in the road race, being thwarted each time by their rivals from Cal Poly, while Men's lacrosse lost a tough 8-6 non-league match at the University of Arizona.

The one local event of the week is a women's lacrosse scrimmage earlier this afternoon between the UCSB B side and Westmont, on the lacrosse field. The away action next weekend is highlighted by three clubs moving into the playoffs. The Rugby team will be up at Stanford for the regionals, where they look to meet the Cardinal (whom they defeated in Santa Barbara two weeks ago) for the right to compete in the nationals. The Men's and Women's Ultimate Frisbee squads have the sectionals in San Diego, while Men's Lacrosse faces its league playoffs in Berkeley.

In regular competition, the UCSB cyclists spend the weekend at Berkeley, while the triathletes will be competing on a short course (500yd swim, 14 mile ride, two and a half mile run) at the LA Marathon Sunday. On the water the sailing team will compete in the North Regatta at Stanford and the UC Santa Barbara water skiers travel to a tournament on Horton's Lake in Newbury Springs.
